I refuse to buy anything else made by playstation. I bought the Ps1 and it broke within 2 weeks. I can't remember what happened. Then i bought the PS2, the door wouldn't go back in to load the disk within 2 months. I sent it in for repair since it was under warranty still. Even though someone signed for the package at the facility, they claim it was never received and i'm just out of luck. I figure if that's the way they do business, they won't be getting anymore of mine. Good luck getting it fixed.

Thank you so much for your detailed comment. I'm not real sure what happened to it. We were just assuming it was the magnet. But...we did get the hard drive from the guy and it worked! So my son is happily playing his games again.

dying hard drives seem to be a somewhat common problem with the ps3. i don't actually own one yet (i'd like one, but finances don't allow it), so i can't confirm this, but around most of the gaming forums it seems that the ps3 uses an SATA laptop hard disk, the 2.5" variety. you could try check out newegg or tigerdirect for prices of those if the guy selling the used one falls through.

i'm assuming you've tried the "restore" feature already and it keeps repeating the error, that usually indicates a dead hard disk. :(

in my experience with computers, magnets have to be pretty strong to damage a hard disk, and usually it will just corrupt the disk so that it needs to be "restored" (ie, re-imaged with the factory information, "blanked"). in checking out ways to quickly erase hard disks, i actually used a tv degausser (large ring-shaped electromagnet, quite powerful) on a hard disk several times and the thing was still able to boot.

but again, a restore would fix that, so it's unlikely the magnet is the culprit. more than likely it's either heat/humidity, or a fall/bump that's the culprit. hard drives are like diamonds, you can drop one and it can be fine, or you can hit it just right and it (metaphorically) shatters into a million pieces.

or it could have just been a dodgy hard disk to begin with. hope that helps. :D
